LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of this course, you will be able to
Connect a supplied business dataset to Tableau and identify the dimensions and measures relevant to a stated question.
Build comparison and trend visualisations that accurately answer a business question, and explain a sorting or filtering choice.
Create and validate a business calculation, such as profit margin, and explain what it is for.
Combine multiple worksheets into an interactive dashboard with working filters or dashboard actions.
Present at least three defensible observations from a dashboard, separate observation from interpretation, and name one limitation.
Take an unfamiliar business dataset and stakeholder brief, build a working dashboard independently, and revise it against a change request after initial completion.
TARGET LEARNER
Who this course is for
This programme is for people who need to turn business data into visual reports and dashboards.
Business, operations, marketing or sales staff producing reporting from spreadsheet-style data.
Junior analysts and graduates entering data-oriented roles.
Small-business owners or managers who want to build their own reporting rather than commission it.
A short diagnostic at the start checks entry capability directly. Employment or age alone does not establish it. If you already build Tableau dashboards independently at work, this course will move too slowly for you.
Prerequisites
What you need
No prior Tableau experience is required.
You should be able to open and save files, identify rows and columns in a spreadsheet, and recognise basic numerical and date values.
Spreadsheet familiarity is useful but not required.
A suitable computer, internet access, and the confirmed Tableau learning environment for this cohort.
A 15-minute non-graded diagnostic at the start of the course checks entry capability and flags anyone who may need spreadsheet support first.
COURSE OVERVIEW
What this course is about
Tableau for Business Beginners is a structured, instructor-led programme for working professionals, junior analysts and graduates who need to turn spreadsheet-style business data into visual reports a stakeholder can actually use. The course covers connecting and inspecting data, building comparison and trend views, calculated fields, and interactive dashboard design, combining a supplied business dataset with dashboard building throughout every session.
The programme runs across six modules delivered in 120-minute live sessions, one session a week for six weeks by default, for 12 scheduled live hours plus roughly 3 hours of independent practice. Every session includes a short independent modification task rather than only following the trainer, and the course finishes with a capstone dashboard built from a stakeholder brief, not a supplied template.
No prior Tableau experience is required. Basic spreadsheet familiarity, being able to open and save files, and recognise rows, columns and basic numerical or date values, is expected. A short non-graded diagnostic at the start checks this before the first session.
What the course covers:
Connecting and Inspecting Data: linking a supplied business dataset and identifying dimensions and measures relevant to a stated question.
Refining an Analysis: sorting and filtering to focus a view, and explaining how a filter changes the result.
Business Calculations: building and validating a simple calculated field such as profit margin.
Interactive Dashboards: combining worksheets into a dashboard with meaningful filtering or dashboard actions.
Communicating Findings: presenting defensible observations, separating observation from interpretation, and naming a limitation.
Capstone: an end-to-end business performance dashboard built from a stakeholder brief, including a post-submission change request.

FAQ
1
What is assumed, and what does this course skip?
Basic computer use and being able to open, save and read a spreadsheet. A 15-minute non-graded diagnostic at the start checks this. The course does not cover Tableau Prep, advanced Level of Detail expressions, advanced table calculations, statistical modelling, or Tableau administration.
2
How much time does this actually take, including work outside sessions?
12 scheduled live hours across six 120-minute sessions, plus roughly 3 hours of independent practice between sessions. Total learner commitment is approximately 15 hours across the six weeks.
3
Will this apply to my own systems and data?
Guaranteed exercises use a supplied fictional dataset so the diagnostic, formative tasks and capstone stay consistent across every cohort. Whether you can bring your own company data depends on delivery arrangements and confidentiality restrictions. Do not upload confidential company information to Tableau, particularly to Tableau Public, which is publicly accessible.
6
What exactly do I walk away with?
A completed business performance dashboard built from a stakeholder brief, evidence of at least one calculated field you built and validated yourself, three presented findings, one acknowledged limitation, and a documented response to a post-submission change request.
7
Does this map to any external Tableau or Salesforce certification?
No. No Tableau or Salesforce accreditation or endorsement is claimed. This course teaches practical dashboard-building capability, not certification exam preparation.
