LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of this course, you will be able to
Write a working Python program using print, input and f-strings that reacts to what someone types in, not just runs the same output every time.
Build calculators and comparison checks using arithmetic and logical operators that give the right answer every time you test them.
Debug your own program by reading the actual error message Python gives you, then fixing it yourself before asking for help.
Automate a repeated task using a for loop or while loop, so the computer does the boring part instead of you typing it five times.
Present your finished project, an original program you planned yourself, and explain to your family what each part of the code does.
TARGET LEARNER
Who this course is for
For parents ready to stop searching for the right first coding course and start watching their child build something real.
Parents of children aged 8 to 12 who want a structured, tutor-led first Python course rather than a self-paced app with no feedback.
Parents of curious, logic-minded children who enjoy problem-solving and want that curiosity turned into a real skill.
Parents who want proof of progress — live sessions, step-by-step modules, and a finished project their child planned and built themselves.
If you see yourself in one of these, this course is built for you.
Prerequisites
What you need
No previous coding experience is required — this course starts from the very beginning.
- Learners should be aged 8 to 12.
- A computer with internet access is required. Python is free and setup is guided in the first session.
- Basic computer skills such as typing and using a browser are all that is needed.
- Learners should be willing to plan before they code, ask questions, and learn from mistakes.
COURSE OVERVIEW
What this course is about
Python Coding for Kids: Part 1 Foundations is a structured, instructor-led programme for children aged 8 to 12 who are new to coding. The course covers algorithms, Python syntax, decisions, loops, and functions in depth, combining short live demonstrations with guided practice in every session.
The programme runs across 10 one-hour live sessions, progressing through thinking like a programmer, writing and running Python code, and storing data before finishing with decisions, loops, and a combined project that draws on every module. Every module introduces exactly one concept, practises it, and connects it to the next.
A computer with internet access is all that is needed throughout the course, with Python setup guided in the first session. Small guided tasks are built into every session from session one so learners are producing working code throughout, not just watching demonstrations.
What the course covers:
Getting Started: thinking like a programmer and writing your first Python commands.
Data and Calculation: storing values and building calculators and comparison checks.
Decisions and Loops: if, elif, else, and repeating tasks with for and while loops.
Lists and Functions: storing many values and building reusable commands.
Debugging and Project: reading error messages, fixing them, and an original final project.
CIRRICULUM
10 Modules. 10 live Sessions. Hundreds of small wins.
The curriculum starts with thinking like a programmer, then moves through Python syntax, data, and decisions before finishing with loops, functions, and a combined final project. Each module introduces exactly one concept before connecting it to the next.
01
Think Like a Programmer
Learn to turn a real problem into an ordered set of instructions before writing a single line of code, using flowcharts and structured thinking as the planning tool.
02
Communicate with Python
Write your first interactive Python program that greets the user by name, using the core input and output commands every Python programmer uses from day one.
03
Store and Understand Data
Learn how Python stores information in variables, predict what type a value is at any line, and convert safely between strings, integers and floats without the program crashing.
04
Calculate and Compare
Build a working calculator and a comparison check that uses Python's arithmetic, comparison and logical operators together in a single program.
05
Make Programs Choose
Write programs that answer differently depending on a condition, including branching decisions and nested logic built from if, elif and else.
06
Make Programs Repeat
Automate a repeated task using for and while loops, and learn when and how to stop a loop deliberately with break and continue.
07
Remember Many Things
Organise a set of related values in a Python list, then access individual items, take slices, and update the list while the program runs.
08
Build Reusable Commands
Turn a block of repeated code into a named function with parameters and a return value, then call it multiple times instead of retyping the same logic.
09
Detect, Test and Repair
Read a Python traceback message, find the actual line at fault, and fix a syntax, runtime or logic error using a systematic approach rather than guessing.
10
Combine and Create
Plan, build and test a small original Python program from a brief, choosing which of the previous nine modules' techniques it actually needs and justifying each decision.

FAQ
1
What age group is this course designed for?
Python Coding for Kids: Part 1 Foundations is designed for children aged 8 to 12. The pace, module structure, and project themes are all calibrated for this age group, making it a natural and well-paced first coding course for primary and early secondary school children.
2
Does my child need any coding experience before joining?
No experience is required at all. Module 01 does not even use a computer, it teaches children to think like a programmer by planning a solution as a flowchart before any code is written. This is a deliberate starting point that builds the right habits before the keyboard comes out.
3
Why does the course start with flowcharts rather than writing Python straight away?
Module 01 is called Think Like a Programmer because planning before coding is the habit that separates learners who get stuck from those who solve problems confidently. Children who can sketch their logic before they type make far fewer guesswork errors and find debugging significantly easier in later modules. It is one of the most important things this course teaches.
4
What will my child actually build during the course?
Across the ten modules, learners build a series of progressively more capable Python programs including a personalised greeter, a working calculator, a decision-making program, an automated task, a list-based organiser, and reusable functions. Module 10 is the final project where every learner plans and builds an original Python program from their own requirements brief.
5
What is the final project in Module 10?
Module 10 is called Combine and Create. Each learner receives a program brief and plans, builds, and tests an original Python project that draws on whichever techniques from the previous nine modules their solution actually needs. The final project is presented to peers and parents and is the most tangible evidence of everything your child has learned.
6
Is Module 06 really called the challenge module?
Yes. Loops are one of the most conceptually challenging ideas in early programming and Module 06 is labelled as such on the curriculum so learners and parents know to expect a step up in difficulty. The session is designed with extra practice time built in, and the tutor is prepared for learners to need more than one pass at the concept before it clicks.
7
How does the course teach debugging in Module 09?
Module 09 is dedicated to reading and fixing Python error messages rather than guessing. Learners are shown real tracebacks, taught to identify which line is actually at fault, and given a systematic approach to distinguishing syntax errors, runtime errors, and logic errors. Debugging is treated as a skill to be learned deliberately, not an afterthought.
8
How are the live sessions structured?
Each one-hour session follows a consistent pattern: a short explanation of the new concept, a guided worked example with the tutor, and then independent coding time where learners build their own version. Sessions are recorded so your child can rewatch any part they found tricky, and the tutor is available by email between sessions for follow-up questions.
9
What equipment does my child need?
A laptop or desktop computer with internet access is all that is required. Python is free to download and the tutor guides setup in the first session so nothing needs to be installed in advance. A stable internet connection and a pair of headphones are recommended for the live sessions.
10
What comes next after completing Part 1?
The natural next step is Python Coding for Kids: Part 2 Projects and Games, which builds directly on the foundations in Part 1 and introduces data structures, functions with parameters, independent debugging, and larger multi-session projects. After completing both parts, learners are well prepared to move into the Python Programming for Teens programme.
