LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of this course, you will be able to
Clean and combine business sources in Power Query while preserving a refreshable sequence of transformation steps.
Structure fact and dimension tables, relationships and date logic around defined reporting requirements.
Create DAX measures for growth, ranking, variance and time based analysis that respond correctly to filter context.
Trace unexpected numbers through source data, relationships, filter context and DAX until the cause is identified.
Build report pages, interactions and drill paths around decisions the intended audience needs to make.
Publish, validate and prepare a Power BI report for refresh, access control and organisational distribution.
TARGET LEARNER
Who this course is for
This programme is for people who already work with reporting, spreadsheets, operational data or existing Power BI files and need to take more ownership of the result.
Producing business or management reporting.
Maintaining existing Power BI reports.
Moving from Excel reporting into BI ownership.
Expected to explain how reported KPIs were calculated.
If you have never built a Power BI report, start with Power BI Foundations.
Prerequisites
What you need
This is not the first Power BI course in the pathway. You should already be able to:
connect a simple source in Power BI Desktop;
perform basic Power Query cleaning;
create ordinary table relationships;
write measures using functions such as SUM and DIVIDE;
build a basic report page.
If you cannot do those tasks without step by step instructions, take Power BI Foundations first.
COURSE OVERVIEW
What this course is about
Power BI Practitioner is a structured, instructor-led programme for working professionals who want to move from building charts to owning the result. The course covers analytical data modelling, applied DAX, stakeholder report design, and Power BI Service delivery in depth, combining a multi-file business data pack with report building throughout every session.
The programme runs across eight modules delivered in 90-minute live sessions in UK time, taking approximately 50 to 60 hours of total learning effort, progressing through a validated baseline and Power Query, and analytical modelling before finishing with applied DAX and time intelligence, stakeholder report design, secure distribution, and an end-to-end business intelligence capstone. Every exercise begins with a reporting requirement or a broken calculation, not an isolated feature demonstration.
Power BI Foundations or equivalent experience is assumed throughout the course, with basic Power Query, ordinary relationships, and simple measures expected before joining. A supplied sales model carrying a deliberate relationship defect is diagnosed from session one so learners are correcting real models throughout, not redesigning charts.
What the course covers:
Data Preparation: profiling, cleaning, and consolidating business sources in Power Query.
Analytical Modelling: fact and dimension design, date logic, and filter propagation.
Applied DAX: CALCULATE, iterators, ranking, variance, and time intelligence.
Report Design: drillthrough, tooltips, navigation, and information hierarchy.
Delivery: workspaces, refresh, and row-level security.
Capstone: an end-to-end business intelligence solution built from a stakeholder brief.
CIRRICULUM
8 Modules. From a validated baseline to a published BI solution.
The programme moves from a validated baseline into modelling, applied calculation, stakeholder report design and controlled BI delivery. Each module contributes data, model structures, measures or report components that can be reviewed independently.
01
Business Intelligence and Power BI Workflow
Confirm the end to end workflow, connect supplied sources and build a first report used as the programme baseline.
02
Power Query for Reliable Business Data
Profile, clean, consolidate and reshape source data into repeatable analysis-ready queries.
03
Analytical Data Modelling
Structure fact and dimension tables, date logic, relationships, hierarchies and appropriate filter propagation.
04
DAX Foundations for Business Measures
Build a reusable KPI library while making row context, filter context and measure behaviour explicit.
05
Applied DAX and Time Intelligence
The hardest technical module. Work with CALCULATE, iterators, context modification, ranking, variance and period comparisons.
06
Stakeholder-Focused Report Design
Turn reporting requirements into interactive pages using drillthrough, tooltips, navigation, conditional formatting and clear information hierarchy.
07
Publishing, Refresh and Secure Distribution
Publish to Power BI Service, work with workspaces, configure refresh concepts and apply row-level security at practitioner depth.
08
Business Intelligence Capstone
Take a stakeholder brief from raw source data through model, DAX, report, findings and distribution preparation.

FAQ
1
What does this course assume?
You should already be able to connect data, make basic Power Query changes, create ordinary relationships, write a simple measure and build a report page. The programme does not spend several modules reteaching those skills. Take Power BI Foundations first if those tasks are unfamiliar.
2
How much time does the programme require?
The current curriculum estimate is approximately 50 to 60 hours of total learning effort. That includes guided learning, independent practice, assessment and capstone work. Exact weekly commitment depends on the final timetable and is published once the cohort schedule is confirmed.
3
Can I use my own company data?
The guaranteed exercises use supplied datasets so assessment remains consistent. Using employer data would depend on delivery arrangements, confidentiality restrictions and instructor approval. Do not upload confidential company information to a training environment without permission.
4
What exactly do I produce?
Eight defined artifacts are built through the programme, culminating in an end-to-end Power BI capstone. They include prepared data, a star-schema model, DAX measures, analytical reports, an executive dashboard and final BI delivery evidence.
5
Does this course prepare me for PL-300?
No formal PL-300 alignment is currently claimed. The programme teaches Power BI capabilities that may overlap with Microsoft certification subject matter, but the curriculum has not been mapped against the current exam specification.
6
Do I need Power BI Pro?
Power BI Desktop work does not require a Power BI licence. Current Microsoft guidance indicates that publishing to app workspaces and normal collaboration or sharing typically requires Pro, Premium Per User or an appropriate capacity and permissions arrangement.
7
Is this an advanced Power BI administration course?
No. Service publishing, scheduled refresh, gateway concepts and row-level security are included at practitioner depth. Tenant administration, enterprise Fabric architecture, advanced deployment engineering and large-scale governance sit outside this course.
8
What comes after Practitioner?
The next technical step is Advanced Power BI, DAX and Data Modelling, followed by Microsoft Fabric and Enterprise Analytics for learners moving towards wider enterprise analytics responsibilities.
