LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of this course, you will be able to
Connect common business files and clean them in Power Query for reliable analysis.
Create relationships between fact-style and dimension-style tables, and correct common modelling errors.
Write reusable DAX measures for totals, counts, ratios and filtered business calculations.
Use filter context and relationships to explain why a measure changes across report selections.
Build report pages using suitable visuals, slicers, navigation, tooltips and drillthrough.
Diagnose one data, model or report defect and correct it before final submission.
TARGET LEARNER
Who this course is for
This course is for someone who can work with spreadsheets but has not yet built a complete Power BI solution.
Starting towards data or BI analyst work.
Moving from Excel into Power BI.
Working in reporting or MIS.
Supporting finance, sales or operations reporting.
It is not intended for experienced Power BI developers looking for advanced model optimisation.
Prerequisites
What you need
No previous Power Query or DAX experience is required.
Basic computer and file-management skills.
Familiarity with rows, columns and tables, and the ability to work with a spreadsheet.
A Windows computer capable of running Power BI Desktop.
Helpful but not required: basic Excel formulas, experience reading business reports, familiarity with measures such as revenue, quantity or margin.
COURSE OVERVIEW
What this course is about
Power BI Foundations is a structured, instructor-led programme for career starters and professionals who want to build their first complete Power BI solution. The course covers Power Query, data modelling, DAX, and interactive report design in depth, combining supplied business datasets with dashboard building throughout every session.
The programme runs across 15 one-and-a-half-hour live sessions in UK time, progressing through connecting and cleaning data in Power Query, and building the data model before finishing with DAX measures, interactive dashboards, and a validated retail performance project. Every topic is applied to a supplied business dataset, not a pre-cleaned sample.
No previous Power Query or DAX experience is required, and a Windows computer capable of running Power BI Desktop is all that is needed throughout the course. A working report is built from a supplied sales file in the first module so learners are producing a real dashboard throughout, not isolated exercises.
What the course covers:
Connecting Data: Excel, CSV, web, and database-style sources.
Power Query: cleaning, filtering, and combining business data.
Data Modelling: relationships, cardinality, and filter direction.
DAX: totals, ratios, CALCULATE, and filter context.
Capstone: an interactive retail performance dashboard built and validated end to end.
CIRRICULUM
6 Modules. From a CSV file to a validated dashboard.
The course moves from first connection to a validated dashboard. Each module produces something used again later: a cleaned query set, a model you can explain, a reusable measure set, then the report itself.
01
Connect Data in Power BI
Connect Excel, CSV, web and database-style sources, preview the data and make sensible loading decisions.
02
Clean and Transform with Power Query
Correct types, remove quality problems, filter data and combine tables into analysis-ready queries.
03
Build a Power BI Data Model
Create relationships, work with cardinality and filter direction, then diagnose a deliberately incorrect model.
04
Write DAX Measures
Build totals, counts and ratios, then use CALCULATE and filter context to control analytical results.
05
Build Interactive Dashboards
Use suitable visuals, navigation, tooltips, drillthrough, grouping and trend analysis to answer business questions.
06
Publish and Validate a Power BI Project
Complete the end-to-end dashboard, test calculations and interactions, then publish where appropriate access is available.

FAQ
1
Do I need Power BI experience before I start?
No. The course starts with Power BI Desktop, Get Data and the basic reporting workflow. You should already be comfortable working with ordinary tables or spreadsheets. Previous DAX, Power Query, SQL or Python experience is not required.
2
What will I have to show at the end?
You should finish with a cleaned dataset, a Power BI model, a set of DAX measures, an interactive dashboard and the final PBIX project. The important part is that you can open the work and explain how you built it.
3
How much time should I expect to spend?
The current curriculum estimate is approximately 25 hours of total learning effort, including instruction, practice and project work. The exact weekly schedule depends on the delivery format and cohort calendar.
4
Is this a Microsoft certification course?
No certification alignment is currently claimed. This is an independent Power BI skills course. It may develop capabilities relevant to wider Power BI learning, but it has not been mapped to a current Microsoft certification specification.
5
What happens when a DAX measure gives the wrong number?
Diagnosing incorrect results is part of the curriculum. You examine filter context, relationships and the DAX expression instead of simply replacing the formula with one supplied by the instructor.
6
Do I need a paid Power BI licence?
Not for the core Power BI Desktop learning. Current Microsoft guidance says Desktop phases can be completed without a Power BI licence. Publishing and sharing through workspaces can require Power BI Pro or another suitable licence and role configuration.
7
Is this enough for advanced Power BI work?
No. The course deliberately stops before advanced DAX optimisation, enterprise model architecture, Fabric engineering, gateways in depth and tenant administration. Those belong in later courses.
8
What comes next?
The designed next step is Power BI Practitioner: Business Intelligence and Dashboard Design, where the level shifts towards independent analytical decisions, time-based DAX, report design and controlled distribution.
