LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of this course, you will be able to
Deploy a three-tier Azure environment from Bicep templates, then redeploy it into a second region without hand editing the templates.
Configure Microsoft Entra ID groups, custom RBAC roles and Conditional Access on a live subscription, and prove least privilege by failing a deliberate access test.
Build a hub and spoke virtual network with peering, network security groups and a private endpoint, then trace a blocked packet to the rule that dropped it.
Apply Azure Policy, tags and budgets so a subscription refuses untagged resources and raises a cost alert before spend crosses a threshold you set.
Restore a virtual machine and a storage account from backup under timed conditions, and write the runbook the restore followed.
Instrument an application with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics, then write KQL queries that answer a question your own team currently asks by hand.
TARGET LEARNER
Who this course is for
For administrators who already run infrastructure and now have Azure landing on their desk.
Windows and Linux systems administrators inheriting an Azure subscription somebody else built.
On-premises infrastructure engineers whose employer has started a migration.
AWS or GCP engineers who need a second platform and do not want to start at the beginning.
Support and operations engineers moving from ticket queues into platform work.
Holders of AZ-900 who found it stopped short of anything operational.
Prerequisites
What you need
An Azure subscription is required. Pay-as-you-go is fine, and the labs are sized to stay under roughly £15 a month if you deallocate resources between sessions, which module 1 covers.
You should already administer something in production: Windows Server, Linux, VMware, Microsoft 365, or a cloud platform other than Azure.
We do not teach what DNS, TCP or a subnet mask is. If you cannot read a routing table, take AWS Cloud Practitioner first.
A laptop with a browser and a terminal. Azure CLI and Visual Studio Code are installed in session 1.
Plan for roughly half a working day a week outside sessions. That is the real figure, and it is mostly lab time rather than reading.
COURSE OVERVIEW
What this course is about
AZ-104 Azure Administrator: Applied Practice is the build side of the AZ-104 syllabus. Every session puts you in a live subscription doing the work an Azure administrator is paid to do: cutting permissions back until something breaks, tracing a dropped packet to the rule that dropped it, restoring a virtual machine against a clock. The course covers the same five domains Microsoft examines in AZ-104, and it covers them by making you operate them rather than revise them. You deploy a three-tier environment from Bicep templates in module 7 and spend the remaining weeks governing and recovering the thing you built. Groups are capped at 8. Everyone in the cohort is already working in IT, so nobody spends week one on what a virtual machine is. This course will not get you through the AZ-104 exam on its own. It builds the administration skill the exam tries to measure, and it skips exam technique and practice papers entirely. If you need the certificate by a fixed date, take AZ-104 Exam Preparation (ITL-CLOUD-003) instead, or take both.
CIRRICULUM
AZ-104 Azure Administrator: Applied Practice
9 modules, 18 live sessions, one live subscription throughout.
1
Subscriptions, Resource Groups and Blast Radius
Subscriptions, Resource Groups and Blast Radius. Management groups, subscription structure, tagging from day one, and how to deallocate so the lab stays cheap.
2
Identity with Microsoft Entra ID
Identity with Microsoft Entra ID. Users, groups, service principals, built-in and custom RBAC roles, Conditional Access.
3
Governance, Azure Policy and Cost Control
Governance, Azure Policy and Cost Control. Policy definitions and initiatives, budgets, cost alerts, and what to do when a policy blocks a colleague at 5pm.
4
Storage Accounts, Tiers and Private Access
Storage Accounts, Tiers and Private Access. Redundancy options, lifecycle rules, SAS tokens, private endpoints, and the cost difference between hot and archive on a real bill.
5
Compute, Scale Sets and Availability
Compute, Scale Sets and Availability. Virtual machine sizing, availability sets and zones, scale sets, and images.
6
Virtual Networking
Virtual Networking. Hub and spoke topology, peering, network security groups, route tables, and packet tracing when traffic silently disappears. This is the longest module and the one most cohorts find hardest, because networking is where cloud stops resembling the data centre.
7
Infrastructure as Code with Bicep
Infrastructure as Code with Bicep. Parameters, modules, what-if deployments, and redeploying your environment into a second region.
8
Backup, Restore and Recovery
Backup, Restore and Recovery. Recovery Services vaults, virtual machine and file restore, soft delete, and writing the runbook.
9
Monitoring with Azure Monitor and KQL
Monitoring with Azure Monitor and KQL. Log Analytics workspaces, metrics, alert rules, action groups, and writing KQL against your own logs.

FAQ
1
How is this different from your AZ-104 Exam Preparation course?
Exam Preparation (ITL-CLOUD-003) is built to get you through the exam: domain coverage, practice questions and exam technique across 20 sessions. This course is built to make you an administrator who can do the work. It skips exam technique entirely and spends the time in a live subscription instead. Plenty of people take both, usually this one first.
2
Do I need my own Azure subscription?
Yes. Pay-as-you-go is fine. The labs are sized to stay under roughly £15 a month if you deallocate resources between sessions, and module 1 covers exactly how to do that. We do not use a shared sandbox, because sandboxes hide the cost and permission problems that make Azure administration hard.
3
How much time does it take outside the sessions?
Roughly half a working day a week, almost all of it lab time. That is the real figure rather than the comfortable one. If you cannot find it, the labs will stack up by module 4.
4
Will my employer pay for it?
Often. An invoice can be issued in your company name, and a one-page business case is available covering what the course produces and why it maps to the AZ-104 objectives. Ask for the employer sponsorship pack when you enquire.
5
I already passed AZ-104. Is this still useful?
It is the usual reason people take it. The certificate proves you could answer the questions. This course is about running the thing day to day: tracing a packet, restoring under pressure, stopping a subscription from sprawling.
6
What if I miss a session?
Every session is recorded and posted the same evening, and the lab instructions are in the EngagePro Session Guides. Missing more than three sessions in a row is where people tend to fall off, so tell the instructor early and they will set a catch-up path.
