AI Foundations: Build, Break, Question

Six live sessions where teenagers aged 13 to 15 train, break and retrain a real classifier, audit a dataset for a named bias, and defend a finished AI project the way a working data scientist would. No coding background needed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

By the end of this course, you will be able to

  • Explain why a headline accuracy number can be misleading without knowing how it was tested.

  • Retrain a model after diagnosing exactly what it got wrong, and explain what changed.

  • Audit a real dataset for a named bias, fix it, and explain the trade-off of the fix.

  • Run the same prompts against a rule-based chatbot and a modern language model, and explain what each is better at.

  • Build and document an AI project to a model-card standard, and defend one design decision under questioning.

TARGET LEARNER

Who this course is for

For parents whose teen wants to know why the model got it wrong, not just that it did.
  • Teenagers aged 13 to 15 who are ready to question what they are told about AI, not just use it.

  • No prior coding experience required, though a teen who already uses a computer confidently will settle in faster.

  • Best for a teenager who wants to know why a model got something wrong, not just that it did.

Not a fit for a teenager who already codes confidently and wants an advanced machine learning course. This is a foundations course, not a bootcamp for someone already building models.

Prerequisites

What you need

  • No prior coding experience is required.

  • Learners should be aged 13 to 15.

  • A computer with a stable internet connection and a working webcam or microphone for live sessions.

  • Around 9 hours of independent build time across the six weeks should be expected in addition to the 12 hours of live teaching.

  • Attendance at 5 of the 6 sessions is required to complete the course, since each session builds on the last.

COURSE OVERVIEW

What this course is about

AI Foundations is a six session, live online course for teenagers aged 13 to 15 who are ready to go past "AI is magic" and into how it is actually built and tested. Across six weekly sessions of 120 minutes each, your teen trains an image or audio classifier, diagnoses exactly why it fails on certain inputs, retrains it and measures the difference, audits a real dataset for a named bias such as class imbalance, and runs an identical prompt set against a rule-based chatbot and a modern language model to compare the two.

No prior coding experience is required, though basic computer confidence helps. Sessions run in small groups, live online, one chapter of the syllabus per session, with roughly nine hours of independent build time across the six weeks in addition to live teaching. That independent time is where most of the actual building happens, and it is worth planning for.

What the course covers:
Training, test and validation data, and why a headline accuracy figure can be misleading without knowing the test methodology.
Structured error analysis: training a classifier, evaluating it against held-out data, and retraining after diagnosing a specific failure mode.
A real dataset audit for a named bias, with one documented mitigation and an honest account of its trade-off.
A rule-based or intent-matching chatbot compared directly against a modern LLM on an identical prompt set.
An independent AI project, documented to a one-page model-card standard and defended under questioning from a trainer or a peer.

CIRRICULUM

5 Modules. From a trustworthy accuracy number to a project you can defend.

The programme moves from defining training, test and validation data, into iterative model improvement and a documented bias audit, before comparing a rule-based chatbot against a modern language model and finishing with an independently built, peer-reviewed project documented to a model-card standard.

01

How Machines Learn Versus How They're Told What to Do

Tell training, test and validation data apart, and explain why an accuracy claim needs a test methodology behind it.

02

Train, Test, Improve

Train a classifier, diagnose exactly why it fails, then retrain it and measure the difference.

03

Bias in the Wild

Audit a real dataset for a named bias, fix it, and document the trade-off of the fix.

04

Rules vs. Learning: Two Kinds of Chatbot

Compare a rule-based chatbot against a modern language model on the same prompts, and explain what each is better at.

05

Independent Build and Peer Review

Build and document an AI project to a model-card standard, and defend one design decision under questioning.

FAQ

1

Does my teen need coding experience to join?

No. No prior coding experience is required, though a teenager who already uses a computer confidently will settle in faster.

2

Will this be too basic for a teen who already knows a bit about AI?

It depends what they know. This course goes into dataset bias auditing, structured error analysis and model-card documentation, not just what AI is. If your teen is already training models independently, this may move too slowly for them.

3

How much work is expected outside the live sessions?

Around 9 hours of independent build time across the six weeks, in addition to 12 hours of live teaching. That independent time is where most of the actual model work happens.

4

What will my teen actually walk away with?

A documented AI project built to a one-page model-card standard, evidence of at least one full retraining cycle, and practice defending a design decision under questioning.

5

How are the sessions run, and who is supervising?

Sessions run live online in small groups, one trainer per group, with one chapter of the syllabus taught per weekly session.

6

What happens if my teen misses a session?

Completion requires attending 5 of the 6 sessions. If a session is missed, we will point you to the specific content to cover before the next one.

7

What comes after this course?

Learners who want to keep building can move into a general Python course to start coding models directly, rather than using no-code training tools.

8

Is the instructor vetted for working with teenagers this age?

ITLearnner instructors work with young learners in small, moderated live groups. Ask us directly for the specific safeguarding and vetting documentation for this course's instructor before enrolling, since that detail is confirmed per instructor rather than assumed here.
