LEARNING OBJECTIVE
By the end of this course, you will be able to
Explain, in plain language, the difference between a machine that has learned from examples and one that is just following a script.
Train, test and improve a simple image classifier, and explain why it got something wrong.
Spot when a training dataset is missing a group of examples, and suggest what to add.
Build a working chatbot from a set of rules, and find a question that breaks it.
Stand up and explain, to someone who is not technical, what their AI project does and where it falls short.
TARGET LEARNER
Who this course is for
For parents who want their child to understand AI, not just use it.
Children aged 10 to 12 who ask questions like "how does the phone know it is me."
No coding background needed, just curiosity and a willingness to try things that do not work first time.
Best for a child who likes taking things apart to see how they work, not just using the finished thing.
Not a fit for a child who wants to leave with a polished app in six weeks. This course is about understanding what is under the hood, not shipping a product.
Prerequisites
What you need
No prior coding experience is required.
Learners should be aged 10 to 12.
A computer with a stable internet connection, a working webcam or microphone, and a modern browser.
No software installation is required for most sessions. Scratch runs in the browser.
Attendance at 5 of the 6 sessions is required to complete the course, since each session builds on the last.
COURSE OVERVIEW
What this course is about
AI Explorers is a six session, live online course for children aged 10 to 12 who are curious about how AI actually works, not just what it can do. Across six weekly sessions of 90 minutes each, your child trains an image classifier using Google's Teachable Machine, audits a deliberately lopsided dataset to see how bias gets built in, builds a rule-based chatbot in Scratch, and finishes by building and presenting one AI project of their own choosing at a live Family Demo Day.
No prior coding experience is required. Sessions run in small groups, live online, one chapter of the syllabus per session, with roughly three hours of independent practice across the six weeks in addition to live teaching.
What the course covers:
The examples to training to prediction loop, and how a trained system differs from a scripted one.
Collecting labelled examples and training an image classifier, then testing it against examples it has never seen.
Auditing a training dataset for missing categories and explaining how that produces an unfair result.
Building a rule-based chatbot with at least three question and answer rules, then finding a question that breaks it.
An independent AI project, written up in a one-page explainer and presented to a non-technical audience.
CIRRICULUM
5 Modules. From noticing the difference to presenting your own AI project.
The programme moves from spotting the difference between a trained system and a scripted one, into training and testing a real classifier and auditing a dataset for bias, before building a chatbot and finishing with an independent AI project presented at Family Demo Day.
01
Machines That Notice Things
Tell a trained machine apart from a scripted one, using the language of training, examples, labels and predictions.
02
Show and Tell for Machines
Train and test a real image classifier, then explain a misclassification in plain language.
03
Whose Examples Count?
Find what a lopsided training dataset is missing, and explain why that produces an unfair result.
04
Build-a-Buddy Chatbot
Build a rule-based chatbot from scratch, then find the question that breaks it.
05
Family Demo Lab
Build, document and present one independent AI project to a non-technical audience.

FAQ
1
Is this course suitable for a child who has never coded before?
Yes. No coding experience is required. The image classifier and chatbot both use no-code or block-based tools built for this age group.
2
Will my child be lost if they are new to AI entirely?
No. Chapter 1 starts from everyday examples of AI your child already uses, before any training or building begins.
3
What will my child actually be able to do at the end?
They will have trained a real image classifier, built a chatbot with their own rules, and finished one independent AI project they can explain to someone who is not technical.
4
How are the sessions run, and who is supervising?
Sessions run live online in small groups, one trainer per group, with one chapter of the syllabus taught per weekly session.
5
What happens if my child misses a session?
Completion requires attending 5 of the 6 sessions. If a session is missed, we will point you to the specific content to cover before the next one.
6
What comes after this course?
AI Foundations, our course for ages 13 to 15, goes further into testing, bias auditing and comparing chatbot approaches, or your child can continue with a general Python for Kids course if they want to code.
7
Can we try a session before committing?
Yes. A free taster session is available before you enrol.
8
Is the instructor vetted for working with children this age?
ITLearnner instructors work with young learners in small, moderated live groups. Ask us directly for the specific safeguarding and vetting documentation for this course's instructor before enrolling, since that detail is confirmed per instructor rather than assumed here.
