Learning Objective
By the end of this course, you will be able to
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- explain what coding is and describe how Python gives step-by-step instructions to a computer
- identify the key Python building blocks including variables, input, output, and data types
- apply conditionals and loops to build programs that make decisions and repeat actions
- build five mini-projects including a Quiz Game, Name Generator, and Mini Adventure Game
- run their programs and check whether the output matches what they expected
- debug simple Python errors by reading error messages and correcting their code
- create a final Python project and present it to peers and family
Target learners
Who this course is for
Children aged 8 to 12 who are completely new to coding and want a fun, structured first course.
Young learners who enjoy games, stories, puzzles, and building creative things on screen.
Parents who want live, tutor-led coding lessons with feedback
Students who need guided practice and explanation after every topic before moving on.
Children curious about how programs work and motivated to build their own projects.
Prerequisites
What you need
No previous coding experience is required — this course starts from the very beginning.
Learners should be aged 8 to 12.
A computer with internet access is required - Python is free and setup is guided in session one.
Basic computer skills such as typing and using a browser are all that is needed.
Learners should enjoy creative challenges and be willing to try, make mistakes, and try again.
Course Overview
What this course is about
A carefully designed beginner Python programme that helps young learners understand how coding works before writing real Python programs. Across thirteen guided modules, learners explore instructions, algorithms, computers, input and output, problem-solving, Python commands, variables, numbers, decisions, loops, functions and a final creative project.
This course is designed for children aged 10 - 12 who are new to coding or ready to move from visual coding into typed Python. The focus is on confidence, creativity, logical thinking, debugging and hands-on practice.
Learners build small projects throughout the course, including robot instruction cards, input/output examples, mini profile programs, score counters, choice games, quizzes, guessing games and a final creative Python project.
Curriculum
01
Getting Started with Python
Explore what coding is, discover how Python works, and write your very first programs using print(), input(), and variables — so your code comes to life from session one.
02
Making Decisions
Learn how computers make choices using if statements and if/else logic, and apply logical thinking to build programs that respond differently to different inputs.
03
Loops and Repetition
Discover how to make a computer repeat actions using for loops and while loops, and use counters to track how many times something has happened.
04
Working with Data
Learn how Python stores different types of information — text strings, numbers, and simple lists — and practise combining and displaying them in programs.
05
Mini Functions
Learn how to wrap reusable code into functions so you can call it again whenever you need it, making your programs shorter and easier to understand.
06
Mini-Projects Workshop
Apply all five skill areas to build a Name Generator, Quiz Game, Guess the Number game, and Story Creator — each project reinforcing a different set of skills.
07
Final Project — Mini Adventure Game
Design, build, test, and present an original text-based adventure game using variables, conditions, loops, and functions — combining everything learned across the course.

Frequently asked questions
1
What age is this course designed for?
Python Young Coders Foundation is designed for children aged 8 to 12. The pace, language, and projects are all tailored for younger learners, making it an ideal first coding course for primary and early secondary school age children.
2
Does my child need any coding experience?
No previous coding experience is required at all. The course starts from the very beginning — even what a program is — and builds up gradually through fun, creative projects. Children who have never typed a line of code are exactly who this course is designed for.
3
What will my child build during this course?
Students build five mini-projects across the course including a Name Generator, Quiz Game, Guess the Number game, and Story Creator. The course finishes with a Mini Adventure Game that combines all the skills learned — a project your child can be genuinely proud of.
4
How are sessions delivered?
Sessions are delivered live online in small groups via video conference with a dedicated ITLearnner tutor. Each session is hands-on with coding time built in, and all sessions are recorded so your child can rewatch anything they found tricky.
5
What equipment does my child need?
A laptop or desktop computer with a stable internet connection is all that is needed. Python is free to download and the tutor guides setup in the first session, so no preparation is required in advance.
6
How long is each session and how often do they run?
Each session runs for approximately one hour and the course spans ten sessions. The schedule is confirmed before the course starts and shared with parents at enrolment. Sessions are designed to be focused and enjoyable for younger learners without being too long.
7
Will my child write real Python code or use drag-and-drop blocks?
Your child will write real Python code from session one. Python's simple, readable syntax makes it approachable for younger learners, and writing real code means the skills are genuinely transferable — your child is learning the same language used by professional developers worldwide.
8
What comes after this course?
The natural next step is Python Young Coders Plus, which builds on the same foundation with more complex data structures, functions with parameters, and larger project work. After completing both parts, learners are well prepared to move into the Python Teen Coders programme.
9
Is this course suitable for children who have only done Scratch?
Yes — this is one of the most natural progressions from Scratch. Children who have used Scratch already understand the logic of events, loops, and conditions. This course builds on that intuition and introduces real Python syntax in a way that feels achievable rather than overwhelming.
10
How do parents stay informed about their child's progress?
A course outline and session schedule are shared with parents at enrolment, and session recordings are available after each class. Parents are welcome to observe sessions and the tutor is available by email between sessions for any questions about their child's progress.
